A projector and a white sheet can create the perfect atmosphere for a backyard movie night, but the movie itself can spark some fun ideas for your evening!
With just a few extra touches, your backyard can magically transform into a baseball field, a tropical paradise, a prehistoric park, a whimsical land, or even an old-fashioned drive-in! Add in some fun activities and tasty snacks, invite everyone to dress up for the theme, and you’ll have five fantastic family or friend staycations right in your own backyard.
The best part? All of these adventures share one essential element: your lawn! A lush, comfortable lawn gives everyone plenty of room to play, a cozy place to gather, and a delightful spot to enjoy the evening outdoors.
What to watch: The Sandlot, A League of Their Own, or Angels in the Outfield
Invite everyone to wear a team jersey and baseball hat and begin the evening with some catch. If you have enough room, set up a plastic bat home-run derby or create a target throwing game using buckets placed around the yard.
Got some kids into crafts? Younger children can make their own baseball cards before the movie. Let them choose a team name, draw their picture, and make up some impressive player stats.
For dinner, serve a ballpark-themed menu with hot dogs, soft pretzels, popcorn, lemonade, and ice cream sandwiches. Paper trays or baskets will make it easy to eat outside (and easy cleanup!).
A lawn is meant to be enjoyed, but repeated foot traffic can compact the soil, especially in areas where children play, where people regularly gather, and even where your furry friend surveys the backyard.
When your soil is compacted, water and nutrients can't get to the grass roots. You may notice that the ground feels hard, water pools instead of soaking in, or the grass struggles in those areas.
Core aeration removes small soil cores from the lawn to help relieve compaction. This creates more space for the resources grass needs to reach the root zone and can encourage stronger, healthier growth.

What to watch: Moana, Lilo & Stitch, or another movie set somewhere warm and tropical.
Ask everyone to come in their best tropical shirts, sun hats, or their brightest summer clothes. Organize a limbo contest, bring out the beach balls, or hide paper flowers and seashells around the yard for a scavenger hunt.
Continue the theme with fruit skewers, pineapple pizza (yes, it is a legitimate pizza!), coconut cookies, and a few colorful drinks. Some beach towels and patio cushions will help create comfy seating without additional decorating.
If the weather is super warm, wait until later in the day before placing towels and blankets on the lawn. No one wants to start movie night by sitting on grass that has been baking in the afternoon sun.
Hot weather can be hard on your grass, but a brown lawn doesn't necessarily need daily watering.
Deep, less frequent water generally encourages roots to grow further in the soil, while frequent shallow watering can keep the roots closer to the surface. Watering early in the morning will also give the water time to soak into the soil before the hottest part of the day.
Brown or thinning grass may also be caused by compacted soil, insects, disease, mowing practices, or other conditions.

What to watch: The Good Dinosaur, The Land Before Time, or Jurassic Park for families with older children
Explorer hats, dinosaur shirts, and homemade tails are all welcome for this fun adventure! Before everyone arrives, hide toy dinosaurs or paper “fossils” around the yard. Kids can enjoy searching for them using a homemade map or try a mini fossil dig by hiding small toys in a sand-filled container.
For snacks, serve “dinosaur egg” grapes, cookies shaped like fossils, refreshing green punch, and chocolate pudding cups topped with crushed cookies. A few toy dinosaurs near the food table will add a playful touch to the whole setup.
While there may not be dinosaurs under your grass (please don’t go digging for fossils), there can be considerable activity beneath the surface. White grubs live in the soil and feed on grass roots.
When your lawn is infected with grubs, areas may turn yellow or brown, feel soft, or lift away from the soil due to root damage. Animals digging through the lawn can also indicate they’ve found something underneath.
However, brown grass doesn’t necessarily mean grubs are the cause. Drought, heat, disease, and other lawn issues can produce similar symptoms.

Invite everyone to wear a cape, robe, crown, or something inspired by their favorite character. Maybe you have some old Halloween costumes lying around. The costumes don’t need to be elaborate or pricey; even a towel can become a cape surprisingly quickly when a movie is about to start.
Before the sun goes down, make wands from fallen twigs or set up a “potion station” using fruit juices, sparkling water, and colorful ice cubes. Solar lights can create a glowing path from the house to the seating area once it gets dark.
Serve star-shaped sandwiches, fruit wands, decorated cookies, popcorn in paper cones, or cupcakes topped with different colors so everyone can choose their own.
A thick, green lawn can completely change how a backyard feels, but it takes more than a wave of a wand to get there.

Keep the menu simple with sliders, fries, popcorn, candy boxes, milkshakes, or sparkling drinks. Hand everyone their order in a paper bag or tray before they “park.”
Blankets and lightweight cardboard cars are fine for an evening, but heavier movie equipment will need more care.
Inflatable screens, speakers, tables, and outdoor furniture can flatten the grass or block it from receiving light and air. Set up everything close to movie time, avoid dragging heavy items across the lawn, and remove everything once the evening is over. You’ll thank yourself in the morning!
If the grass looks flattened the next morning, gently rake and give the area time to recover. Moving activities to different parts of the yard can also help prevent the same section from receiving all the traffic.
